Practical Geometry (Finland) Activity #1

Author: Jaana Auer

School,country: Helsingin Uusi yhteiskoulu, Finland

Level: 7th Grade, 13-years old

Subject: Math, English, Art

Title of the activity: Practical Geometry

Justification and description of the activity:
I have a special education class with students who have different problems such as dysfasia, asperger syndrome and adhd. On Tuesday we had first Math, after that English and finally Art. I decided to combine all those subjects because we had geometry in Math and repetition of colours in our English chapter and Art.
First we repeated what kind of geometric figures ( in Finnish and English) there are and I gave geoboards, rubber bands and handouts for everybody and they started to make different figures. They could also use their own imagination to make all kinds of figures, animals etc.
They counted the triangles and other figures from two boards and named them.

After that we rehearsed the colour wheel; secondary and complementary colours. I gave them pictures of four different animals, (deer, fox, elephant and reindeer) made from different geometric figures and they chose one of them. Then they coloured the picture using two complementary colours by their own choise.

(Next day we continued doing math and students mesured the wall in the classroom and counted the area and the amount of paint that would cover the wall and how much that would cost)

Sessions: 3 x 90 minute lessons
