Word order - Finnish activity #5

Author: Karin Zelenka, migration class teacher
School, country: Mittelschule Woerth, Germany

Level: lower secondary 7th to 9th grade, age 13 to 15

Subject: German

Title of the activity: Word order, sentences and questions

We have tried out the Finnish lessons about sentence structures/ word order. But we modified it a little bit as I taught this lesson in German to the kids in the migration class.

As the educational background of these students varies greatly, it was a big challenge. The ones who came from European countries as Romania and Bulgaria quickly picked up the terms and logical system of the german sentence. As they had learnt the Latin terminologies in their home schools before they could easily take up. For my pupils who came from Eritrea and for the two from the Kurdish part of Iraque it was a very hard struggle. They neither heard the Latin terms before nor did they understand the logic of the word order in the German sentence.

It was a good thing for the to work with word cards as the Finnish team suggested. This gave those Kids a good Support and they had fun trying out funny sentences with the word cards then as well.
